ATC Hockey 12th Annual Fall Classic
Vail, Colorado, October 5-7, 2010

Tournament is now full!

Host:  Mark Howell

Enjoy a return to Vail Colorado for the 12th Annual Air Traffic Controller's Fall Classic. The Vail International Condominiums and Dobson Ice Arena will be our hosts for the tournament, just like in 2005. Because of our past tournament in Vail and the good relationship I have with the rink manager, this years mini tournament fee has been lowered to $70 !

Dates:  Arrive either on Monday Oct. 4 or Tuesday Oct. 5 as early as possible so that you can enjoy some of the wonderful Fall colors on your drive up to Vail. This year will feature a special event never done before - we will have a free complimentary drop-in skate from 12-1 pm.  In Tuesday, Oct. 5 for the first 20 players and 2 goalies that sign up and commit to being in Vail by Noon on Tuesday. This is a chance to get your lungs ready for 2 days of hockey at 9,000 feet. Actually by then, it will be too late, but come anyway.

Then join us for drinks and the traditional hockey draft that evening about 6:00 pm to kick off the festivities. Although the games officially end on Thursday, I would encourage everyone to stay until at least Friday or Saturday and enjoy the wonderful Rocky Mountains.

Hockey:  Tournament is now full!

Each player's ability will be rated according to the Andy McGowan rating system, which is so complex that even the National Security Administration has not been able to decode it.  However, if your new to the tourney and don't know your rating,  use the International ATC Hockey Tournament rating system found in Appendix 2 of the Rules.  We will form teams via draft the same way it has been done for many years in which goalie's will select their players at a closed draft on Tuesday, Oct. 5, beginning at 2:00 pm. We will then announce the teams and the tournament schedule at 6:00 pm on Tuesday night at the opening party.

Bring a white and a dark jersey! This is very important.

Games will consist of two 20-minute stop clock periods and the third period 20 minute running time. One time-out per team per game...of course no checking, but slap shots and two line passes will be allowed.  We will use the International ATC Hockey 10-point scoring system. Each team will play 4 games, 2 per day (two on Wednesday and two on Thursday). The last two games on Thursday will consist of 2 All Star games, the same format as in years past.

Transportation:

The best option is to fly into Denver International Airport (DIA).  You will need a rental car to get from the airport to the hotel in Vail 2 hours drive time. The good news is that the rink is 200 feet from the hotel so once you arrive in Vail you will never have to drive again until you leave to go home.  Vail also has free bus service anywhere in town.  I would encourage everyone to carpool as much as possible to Vail from DIA.

Hotel:  Vail International Condominiums

The Vail International has 2 bedroom condominium units that sleep four people. The rate for each condo is $120 per night plus about 10% tax. That's about $35 per person each night if you put 4 people in a condo, a pretty good deal. I will let you know when these rooms are available to be booked, probably sometime after May 1.

Nightly Events:  To be announced. All within walking distance!

Vail Weather:  Typically, the weather will be in the 70's in Vail in early October, but the evenings will cool down into the 50's.
